Bringing high-quality massage to the mainstream

It’s not what you think…

There’s a revolution happening at the moment, health and well-being are at the forefront of people’s minds as we live longer and want to enjoy our lives to the full. Regular massage can help improve the quality of peoples’ lives, from reducing stress and improving energy to easing back and other musculoskeletal pains.

Imagine owning and operating a business that not only gives back to the community and to peoples’ lives but is a business that generates consistent revenue enabling you to live the life you want to lead.

You may not be aware but since 2002, when the first Membership-Based Massage Business opened, over 2,000 have been established in the US and this has inspired The Massage Company to introduce this business model to the UK to mirror the success that has been achieved. Already in the UK there is a huge market, but importantly there is huge potential for further growth with turnovers set to exceed £1m by year 5 combined with six figure EBITDAs.

This is not just any old opportunity, this is an opportunity for serious investors and business people that have the desire to build a significant multi-million-pound business that has recurring revenues to support ongoing investment and growth.

About The Massage Company

In March 2016, Elliot Walker and Charlie Thompson opened the first outlet of The Massage Company in Camberley. It was the culmination of many years’ development work and the physical representation of their dream to open the first Membership Based Massage Business outside North America.

Their reasoning was simple, over a period of some years they had seen the phenomenal rise of this new business sector during business trips to the US. They had seen the growth being achieved by the first US operator in the market who, over a period of 10 years, grew their business from 30 to 1100+ outlets, and they were determined to bring this business model to the UK.

They were determined to not only be the first Membership Based Massage Business (MBMB) in the UK, but that they would completely change the face of the UK massage industry.

  • Their business would operate from purpose-built premises.
  • They would have highly trained massage therapists who would deliver a consistently high-quality service.
  • They would provide good value for money with massage treatments at a reasonable and affordable rate.
  • They would make it easier for massage to become a routine part of people’s lives rather than simply an irregular and often expensive ‘treat’.
  • They would provide their services from locations and at times that were convenient to their customers.
  • Their vision was simple: they would bring high-quality massage to the mainstream.
  • They wanted people to see that massage could become a vital and routine part of a better and balanced quality of life.
  • Above all else they were determined to make a difference to the nation’s health and well-being.

So what skills and experience do you need you to be able to demonstrate?

Management Experience
From day one you will be responsible for the development and running of your business. Yes, you will have all the help and support you need from your franchisor’s team, but you will be responsible for managing your business. Even before you start to trade you will be responsible for recruiting staff and guiding them through their training programme. You will also need to implement the pre-launch marketing programme that will allow your new business to hit the ground running. The Massage Company is very much a ‘people business’. Your staff will interact on a close, one-to one basis with your customers and it will be your responsibility to manage their activities in a way that continuously enhances the relationship between customers and your business.

Business Development
You will be responsible for growing the business to achieve a dominant position in your location. Remember, The Massage Company is the only business of its type in the UK and has a monopoly at the moment but that may change in future. You, therefore, need to establish your business as quickly and as profitably as you can.

Customer Service Focus
You will need to be passionate not only about the success of the business but also the improvements in well-being that your customers achieve by using your services. The Membership format will encourage customers to remain with you but the service they receive will be the key driver to retaining them as long-term customers.

Financial Management
Whilst the systems and processes for managing your business finances will be provided by your franchisor, experience of Management Accounts, Profit and Loss and Cashflow management would be advantageous.

You will also need to have access to sufficient investment funds to finance the business and, if you need to borrow additional funds to those you already have, you will need a good credit record.

But above all else you will need to demonstrate a passion for both running a successful business and improving the well-being of your customers and staff.

What Makes The Massage Company So Different?

So why is this type of business so successful? Well it links together the well-proven concept of a membership-based business, as seen in most gym and fitness club models, with the growing awareness of the benefits of massage.

Regular massage is proven to help with stress, aid relaxation, raise alertness and assist in recovery from treatment and surgery. But for most, massage is still occasional, often of mediocre quality and frequently expensive.

The Massage Company are changing this. Powerful beliefs drive their brand: to make it easier for people to benefit from massage; to make it routine – from once in-a-blue moon to once a month; and to change people’s understanding of the positive effects regular massage can have on different aspects of their life.

Their vision is simple: to bring high-quality massage to the mainstream. The Massage Company want people to see massage as good value for money, so it can become a vital and routine part of a better and balanced quality of life.

How?

The Massage Company know that if they are to encourage more people to make massage a regular part of their fitness and well-being activity they must make it easy for them to access their services.

To do this they choose locations that make it easy for customers to get to them. A large proportion of the massages delivered in the UK today take place in small spas or salons, often alongside other treatments such as beauty therapy or hair styling, which are located off-centre and with relatively little passing footfall and other amenities.

The Massage Company, however, chooses locations that are easily accessible to large numbers of people. They choose locations that are close to parking and transport facilities making it easy for customers to access their services. The Camberley location, for example, is close to the main Town Centre Car Park and the Railway station which has services to and from London. These services carry large numbers of commuters to and from the city.

It’s why The Massage Company have re-thought the way people should consume massage…
… They offer a variety of optional treatment upgrades.
… They provide massage in fantastic facilities and highly convenient locations that fit in with their customers’ needs.
… They’ve developed a Certified Training Programme for their staff.
… And why they’ve priced massage reasonably, so that it can become a routine part of their customers’ lives.

This is good quality massage, for life.
